Wigan capture the signature of Arsenal youngster

The January transfer window has only just opened and the Latic’s have already confirmed their first signing!

Josh Robinson joins from Arsenal, for an undisclosed fee on a three and a half year deal. A versatile right back, who is exactly what we needed, and it’s fair to say it’s a great to the window!

Wigan Athletic welcomed Birmingham City to the Brick Community Stadium on a chilly afternoon, with fans hopeful for a strong performance. However, despite a promising start, the Latics fell to a 3-0 defeat, leaving supporters frustrated and searching for answers.

A Bright Start That Fizzled Out

The game began with Wigan on the front foot, showing energy and determination in the first 10 minutes. A couple of half-chances and quick passing movements had the home crowd buzzing, but the early momentum didn’t last. Birmingham gradually grew into the game, capitalising on Wigan’s defensive lapses and clinical finishing to secure a commanding lead.

As the first half progressed, Birmingham found their rhythm, scoring twice before the break. Wigan struggled to contain their opponents, and the frustration was evident among the players and fans alike.

The second half offered little respite for Wigan. Birmingham’s third goal sealed the win, and despite some substitutions and tactical adjustments, the Latics couldn’t mount a comeback.

Wigan’s super Sam Tickle has been featured in numerous articles in the past year, ranging from his incredible rise to latics no.1 to transfer rumours. After an outstanding debut season Sam Tickle has received enormous praise from club & country for his vast shot stopping skills. The Wigan youth product was first handed first team experience from former manager Leam Richardson, which gave his the basic foundations on how to handle the exceeding pressure of being a pro footballer. The 22/23 campaign was one to forget for Wigan, a season in which they placed 24th in the EFL Championship. A season in which saw manager Kolo Toure replaced by Scotsman Shaun Maloney, and he instantly spotted something in Sam Tickle, and Wigan’s final league game in May 2023 marked Sam Tickle’s debut versus Rotherham United and what followed was a sublime 23/24 campaign. Tickle’s talents are well known and it has gained much interest from premier league clubs, particularly the gunners, Arsenal.

Wigan’s trip to the John Smith’s stadium ended in disappointment with the latic’s 3 game winning streak coming to a close at the hands of Huddersfield Town. Their was an element of anticipation in the air this evening with a midweek run out to watch the latic’s which was added to by the festive season. We knew today would be by no means easy, with Huddersfield being promotion favourites, and that it would take a real team effort. The first 45 saw both teams taking early approaches to secure the lead, and Huddersfield certainly were banging on the door, especially through no.10 Josh Koroma. Goalless at half time, meant real change was needed, and we saw Maleace Asamoah replaced by young prospect Dion Rankine. Right from the off Huddersfield continued to press and bully Wigan, and their perseverance was awarded after full back Ollie Turton broke the deadlock, converting a shot that rebounded from a corner moments earlier, a shot that found the bottom left corner in cool style. The terrier’s goal certainly sparked Wigan, but our attack struggled when it came to making that final decision in the final third. Both Cal Mac and Chris Sze were bought off the bench to further ignite that spark, but it was to no avail. We hit 90 mins and found out there would be a minimum of 5 additional minutes, and in that period the latic’s created abit of a buzz in the away end but unfortunately the final whistle was blown signifying Huddersfield Town 1 – 0 Wigan Athletic.

Context:

Tuesday the 26th is a date to remember! With the latic’s returning back to home soil to face Northampton, who at this time of writing find themselves sat 16th, exactly 1 place & 1 point above ourselves. The league places and each teams current form lead us to believe this will be a real mid table clash.

Wigan Athletic:

It’s fair to say it’s been no easy ride for Wigan, in the first 4 months of this 24/25 campaign. After a fairly average summer transfer window, the latic’s had to replace many of 23/24’s fan favourite players. Such as Stephen Humphrys, who left as a free agent after a dispute over wage demands, and also Martial Godo, who returned to his parent loan club, Fulham, where he remains ambitious to impress Marco Silva. But the player departure that caused the most upset, was of youth academy graduate Charlie Hughes, who signed for EFL Championship side Hull City, after numerous rumours suggesting so. The most notable arrivals of this summer where, the return of Liverpool youngster Luke Chambers, on a season long loan, former Fulham youngster Tyrese Francois on a free, and Jensen Weir returning after his departure to Brighton in 2020 following the club’s administration.

Last season’s meeting:

The first meeting between the two sides was at the then “DW Stadium” in August marking Wigan’s first home game of the 23/24 campaign. The match was fairly close and ended Wigan 2 – 1 Northampton. After Sam Hoskins converted a free kick in the 24′ minute, but that was followed by a header converted by Charlie Hughes and then followed by an absolute screamer from Callum Mcmanaman!
